Photo Etching Summer Course

On Saturday 15, Sunday 16 & Monday 17 July, join us for three day Photo Etching Summer School.

This course covers the use of Photec as an acid resist. Photec is a photopolymer film that can be adhered to a metal plate, exposed to a positive artwork on acetate, and developed in such a way that it can produce accurate photographic acid resist. This then allows a photographic image to be etched into a copper plate. The real advantage of this is that the photographic image, once bitten into the surface of the plate can be further worked into using other etching techniques. For this reason, previous etching experience is advised.

During the course participants will prepare their artwork digitally to be printed onto acetate and produce a photo etching plat on copper, they will also learn how to apply aquatint which can help strengthen photo etching images. The size of the plate will be 152 x 203mm (6 x 8 inched).

Day one of the course will be spent preparing artwork digitally and creating a test strip to work out exposure times for each individual image. The second day we will make and print a full sized photo etching plate, applying the learnings of day one to the process. The third day there will be the option to either make a third etching plate, focus on reworking the first plate using drawn and painterly etching processes, or concentrate on printing techniques with demonstrations in relief roll, A la poupee and Chine Colle processes.

It is advised that you bring your own laptop with photoshop on it for this course. It is also advised you have some experience with etching.
