Drawn and Painterly Approaches to Etching Summer Course

On 13, 14 & 15 of July join us for painterly & drawn approaches to etching with Jessica Crisp. This three day course provides the perfect introduction to the medium of etching focusing on its use as a drawing and painting process. The course will start with a technical grounding, introducing innovative techniques that encourage spontaneous and diverse methods of mark-making. Work directly onto metal plates, developing images through various hand applied techniques. Using new safer acid resists makes etching a much healthier process, using neither dangerous acids nor solvents. Following that, you will have time to develop plates using both copper and zinc to explore images and ways of creating images exploiting their etcherly qualities. Book over a month in advance to receive 15% off the course price with our Early Bird tickets! Visiting Edinburgh this summer? Multi Plate Etching Masterclass with Bronwen Sleigh

On Sat 25 & Sun 26 of May , Bronwen will introduce the etching processes which is integral to her own practice. The course covers the process of layering colour images in etching as well as line drawing on copper plates using hard ground and adding tone through aquatint. Drawing inspired by architecture is an important element of Bronwen's approach, though this course encourages drawing with line from a subject matter that is relevant to you. Working directly on copper plates, learn how to make two corresponding plates and print them in perfect register. This etching weekend course provides the perfect opportunity to advance your etching skills and techniques. For people with some previous experience in etching, adding a second plate adds a number of creative possibilities and this weekend gives you the time to learn how. During the course participants will work on two copper etching plates, and the mordants most commonly used at Edinburgh Printmakers. Participants will produce one colour image during the course, learning essential skills of registration. The size of the plates will be 152 x 203mm (6 X 8 inches). Born in 1980 and raised in Mid-Wales, Bronwen Sleigh received her BA from the Glasgow School of Art and MA from the Royal College of Art, where she was selected for a six-week exchange to The University of Calgary, Canada. She has worked for The Royal College of Art, The Royal Academy Schools as a Print Fellow and at Edinburgh Printmakers as their etching technician and collaborating printer. Bronwen works in printmaking, drawing and sculpture, taking inspiration from manmade structures set within a wide variety of landscapes. Book over a month in advance to receive 15% off the course price with our Early Bird tickets! This course entitles you to a FREE 3-month Associate Membership to use the studio and consolidate your skills. Image: Bronwen Sleigh

Photo Etching Weekend

On 23&24 March or the 16&17 of November, this course covers the use of Photec as an acid resist. Photec is a photopolymer film that can be adhered to a metal plate, exposed to a positive artwork on acetate, and developed in such a way that it can produce accurate photographic acid resist. This then allows a photographic image to be etched into a copper plate. The real advantage of this is that the photographic image, once bitten into the surface of the plate can be further worked into using other etching techniques. For this reason, previous etching experience is advised. During the course participants will prepare their artwork digitally to be printed onto acetate and produce and print one photo etching plate on copper, they will also learn how to apply aquatint which can help to strengthen photo etching images. The size of the plates will be 152 x 203mm (6 X 8 inches) Book over a month in advance to receive 15% off the course price with our Early Bird tickets! This course entitles you to a FREE 3-month Associate Membership to use the studio and consolidate your skills.
