From Wed 24th April or the Thur 31 October- join us for our 6-week series of screenprinting classes. This class will give participants time to learn the dynamic and colourful process of screenprinting. During this evening course, each participant will develop their screenprint practice by creating multi-layered prints using an array of techniques, from painterly washes, textures, linear drawings and photographic bitmaps to lean flat areas, colour blends and typography. This evening course will give participants the time to think, re-think, create and re-create artwork between each class, helping them delve into various aspects of their print purchase. To print, the screen is attached to a printing press and acrylic based ink is pushed through the screen mesh onto paper using a squeegee blade. Each layer of colour is printed individually, taking care to register each new ink layer on top of the previous. This course uses water-based inks on paper which are not suitable for printing on textiles. The process is explored through hands-on practice where participants learn practical skills involved in making a screen print. From Sat 25 - Mon 27 May, this 3-day extended course will give you the opportunity to expand on the skills you will acquire by developing your prints for more time with the guidance of Screenprint Technician James Harrison, or taking what you have learned and creating a new multi-layered print from the beginning. After 3 days you will be comfortable and very familiar with the screenprinting process, and have had time to experiment with different inks, layering approaches and exposure techniques. Participants can produce a wide range of detailed marks such as painterly washes, linear drawings, stencil-cutouts, photocopied images, text and much more. Participants will learn the intricacies of the screenprint process, how to coat and expose screens and how to print several coloured layers onto fine art paper. This course uses waterbased inks on paper which are not suitable for printing on textiles. During the course, each participant will work on their own print, developing it from idea to final printed work. Paper size will be approximately A3 with the printed area being around A4. Screenprinting Developer classes consists of 6 separate evenings. Screenprinter James Harrison will lead a series of in-depth demonstrations to aid you in developing your skills in each 3 hour session. Through examples, demonstrations and conversations, you will gain an understanding of what is needed to bring your screenprinting practice to the next level. This class is for people with recent screen printing experience. Please do not book if you are not familiar with the basics of screenprinting. Choose the class you want and book on that date. Wed 25th of April - Alingment Techniques and registration Print projects require problem solving, where one alignment process, such as acetate alignment, may not suffice to create certain types of screen prints. During this advanced course participants will learn the various alignment process that are required to produce a variety of screen prints. Participants will learn about screen and paper stretch, tecniques that are required for artwork to fit together, how to set up tight registration projects and tips and tricks to help align artwork. Thu 2nd of May - Mono printing, Clean Flats and Colour Blending Although they may look simple, clean flat areas and smooth colour blends can be difficult to print consistently. This course will teach the technicalities that come with printing clean flats and setting up screens for printing colour blends. Participants will then be able to use pre-exposed screens to try out mono printing, painting directly onto the screen to create one-of-a-kind prints of their paintings through a variety of separations. Thu 16th of May - Large Format printing Large format printing can be a technical aspect of screen printing that requires consideration and thought before artwork is produced. During this course participants will be shown how to set-up the arm and learn about the natural things that may technically arise during the production of lage-scale screenprinting. This will include screen stretching, climatising paper, printing large format acetates and getting artwork to fit. Thu 23rd of May - Creating Screenprint Editions Editioning can be a complex part of screen printing where consistency is particularly important to create a uniform set of prints. This course will teach participants various tips, tricks and techniques that may be useful during the editioning process. In this two-day course join printmaker and artist Rosalind Lawless for an in depth exploration of colour and colour theory through the process of screen printing. Throughout this weekend class you will become more confident in using colour and understanding its variables. Screenprinting is a fantastic process for achieving variety of hues and colours through the process of ratio to ink/medium and overlaying, which will be introduced and developed upon during this class. In this hands-on weekend course Ros will provide tuiton and support in relation to colour mixing, utilising transparency, layer and colour theory while printing one of your own projects. Experience with screen printing is preferable. About the tutor: Rosalind Lawless is a printmaker, artist and educator based in Glasgow. She has been the recipient of the R.S.A William Littlejohn Award and the R.S.A Residencies for Scotland Award, Peacock and the Worm. In 2019 she was awarded a scholarship at the International Academy of Fine Arts, Salzburg, she was shortlisted for the AnnaLober/Dusseldorf Exchange and was awarded the Bet Low Trust Award. Her work has recently been acquired by the NAtional Galleries of Modern Art, Edinburgh and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.
