Experimental Letterpress with Julia Syrzistie

On the 6th and 7th of September 2025; this exciting new course with Julia Syrzistie, launched in tandem with the studios new wood type department; will explore the use of historical wood type and type specimen books as a means of approaching letterpress through an experimental lens of fine art printmaking. Participants will have the opportunity to print with both wood type from Edinburgh Printmaker’s collection as well as designing and printing their own character which will be laser cut for you during the course.
Guided by Julia, you will be brought on a journey through type, it's historical uses, the letter as form and experiment with type and contemporary pritmaking practices. Participants will create individual prints, and assemble them in a collective installation of throughout the two day workshop, resulting in a collaborative output.
Julia Syrzistie is an artist, printmaker and designer based in Helsinki.
She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Academy of Fine Arts in
Helsinki (2024), and a BA(Hons) degree in Communication Design from the
Glasgow School of Art (2019). In her work, she explores the
ideas of
text-based work as a carrier of meaning through a visual rather than a
written form, with a particular interest in ornamentation and decorative
aspects of typography, handwriting and lettering.
